Welcome back and welcome to the Jungle! We are thrilled to welcome our students to campus today to kick off the 2016-2017 school year.

A major development that most students will have noticed on this first day is that the entire Upper School has relocated to our leased space on the 2nd floor of the Jungle building just across Lillian Way from the Schoolhouse.

CONVOCATION and COMMISSION OF NEW STUDENTS

All students are required to attend in their formal uniform dress. Families are encouraged to attend, as well. There will be a reception with light refreshments after the service.

Convocation and the Service of Commission for New Students is the first of ESLA’s three major school feasts.

Convocation calls us into community: students, faculty and families, old and young, new and returning. We celebrate the promise of the year ahead and the joy of being together to learn and grow. We also commission new students who are publicly charged to commit themselves to the four virtues of the school and to uphold the Honor Code.

INTERSECTIONALITY: Special School Day Program for Wednesday, Aug. 31

This Wednesday we will have a special program to begin a sustained dialogue on intersectionality at ESLA. The day starts with Chapel followed by a presentation in Commons with Dr. Brooks (our own Jason Brooks' dad). After this, we will formally introduce "council" for the first time at ESLA. Council is a traditional way of sharing in a circle and is a powerful tool for teaching our students active listening, respectful speaking, and for empowering them to have difficult conversations. After lunch we break into groups to explore summer reading.

This will be the first of many opportunities to address themes of intersectionality and to unpack some of this summer's tragic and maddening events. As a school, this is our moment to invite students into deep and lasting conversations about difference and inequality. These concerns have always been at the heart of ESLA's mission, but as we embark on a more open and public dialogue, we ask students and faculty to bring their best selves to the conversation.
